ORLANDO, Fla. -- Freshman Kari Miller of the University of Michigan women's tennis team fell in straight sets to No. 19-ranked Georgia Drummy of Duke, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship Monday afternoon (May 24) at the USTA National Campus.
Miller, ranked No. 57, was broken early in the first set at 2-1 and could never catch up. She fought off three set points in the final two games before Drummy converted on her fourth to wrap up the 6-2 win.
The Wolverine freshman was broken in the first game of the second and quickly fell behind 2-0. After holding her serve to get on the board at 2-1, Miller jumped out to a 0-40 lead in the set's fourth game. Drummy answered by winning four straight points to keep the break at 3-1. Drummy won the next two games before Miller held her serve at 5-2.
Miller got one of the breaks back in the next game, winning when Drummy double-faulted on game point. Miller ran her game streak to three straight after another hold, closing the margin to 5-4 with Drummy getting a second opportunity to serve out the match after the changeover.
Miller grabbed two break points in the next game, but Drummy fought off the first with an ace out wide and wrapped up the match on a serve-and-volley winner as Miller's comeback attempt fell short.
Miller, who earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 13-ranked Victoria Flores of Georgia Tech in the first round, ends her stellar freshman season with an 18-5 overall singles record.
