ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by thrower Amanda Schaare, the University of Michigan women's track and field team wrapped up its 2021 regular season on Saturday (May 8) with the B1G Len Paddock Open, the lone home outdoor meet of the season.
Schaare was a double winner, sweeping the shot put and discus titles and claiming two of the Wolverines' seven event wins on the day.
Michigan also got wins from Ziyah Holman (200 meters), Samantha Tran (1,500 meters), Michaiah Thomas (110-meter hurdles), Hannah Waller (long jump) and Maddy Trevisan (3,000 meters).
Schaare, competing in her first outdoor home meet at Michigan, started the day with an outdoor career-best 15.69m (51 feet, 5.75 inches) to take the victory in the shot put, and followed up later in the afternoon with a 50.08m (164-3) heave in the discus.
Also making her outdoor home Michigan debut was Holman, the reigning indoor 400-meter Big Ten champion and current outdoor leader at that same distance. In her first collegiate race at 200 meters, Holman clocked a career-best 24.02 seconds (+0.5m/s) for the fastest time of anyone on the roster this year.
Her 2021 outdoor campaign now includes impressive performances ranging from 24.02 at 200 meters, 52.45 at 400 meters and 2:10 at 800 meters.
Continuing the theme of home debuts, Tran was victorious in hers as she clocked a career-best 4:21.59 to take the victory at 1,500 meters in a battle with teammate Kayla Windemuller by .03 seconds. Those two results made it eight Michigan women under 4:22 so far this season.
Rounding out the debut victories was Waller, who leapt 5.80m (19-0.25) to claim the win in the long jump.
It also was senior day for the Wolverines, with both Thomas and Trevisan closing out their last Michigan home meets on a high note. Thomas ran into a stiff headwind to clock 14.04 seconds (-2.1m/s) for the win in the 100-meter hurdles, while Trevisan took the victory at 3,000 meters in 9:59.17.
Though not in a victorious performance, Mia Manson became the fourth woman in school history to clear four meters in outdoor competition as she made it over 4.01m (13-1.75) for second place. She joins Jessica Mercier from earlier this year as the first pair of Michigan teammates to clear four meters in the same outdoor season. They will aim to become the first teammates to achieve that feat in the same competition next weekend in the postseason.
The Wolverines now turn their attention fully toward the postseason, beginning this coming Friday through Sunday (May 14-16) with the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Champaign, Ill.
