EUGENE, Ore. -- Distance runner Ericka VanderLende concluded the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the University of Michigan women's track and field team on Saturday (June 12) at Hayward Field in her first-ever outdoor nationals appearance.
VanderLende, an indoor and cross country All-American, finished 19th overall in the 5,000-meter final in 16:06.09. Though she did not add outdoor All-America honors to her already impressive resume, she did earn USTFCCCA honorable mention status.
Running from the back half of the field, she stuck with the lead pack for the first mile before the lead group started to pull away in the second mile. VanderLende fell as far as 21st in the field in the last third of the race as she took the bell for the last lap. Over the course of the final lap, she gained back two spots.
Though the Wolverines did not score points at the championships, they will return to Ann Arbor with a second team All-America honor for Aurora Rynda at 800 meters and honorable mention status for VanderLende, Ziyah Holman (400 meters), Alice Hill (steeplechase) and Jessi Larson (10,000 meters).
