OMAHA, Neb. -- The 2021 USA Swimming Trials came to a close Sunday (June 21), and three University of Michigan swimmers have earned the opportunity represent Team USA at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Alumna Catie DeLoof (2019), rising senior Patrick Callan, and rising sophomore Jake Mitchell will don the red, white and blue in Japan.
DeLoof qualified for the 100-meter freestyle relay team thanks to a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 53.87 seconds. The Grosse Pointe, Mich., native had a strong overall showing in Omaha, also finishing seventh in both the 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke as well.
Rising senior Patrick Callan also made Team USA as a member of a relay, earning spots on the 200-meter freestyle team. The Owassa, Okla., native cut more tha a half-second off his semifinal time (1:47.00) in the final, turning in a 1:46.49 to finish in sixth.
The top four finishers in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyles automatically earn a spot on their respective relay teams, while the fifth- and sixth-place finishers must wait to see how the final roster plays out before knowing their fate. In the cases of DeLoof and Callan, they found out they made Team USA late Sunday evening.
In the meantime, rising sophomore Jake Mitchell also heard his name called as a qualifier in the 400-meter freestyle. He finished as the event's silver medalist, and after a solo-qualifying run of 3:45.86, solidified his spot on Team USA
The entire U.S. Olympic swim team will open training camp June 27 in Hawaii. The Olympic Games pool competition will take place July 24-Aug. 1 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
