RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Junior Paul Juda of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team finished second in the all-around with a score of 83.000 at the 2021 Senior Pan American Championships on Friday (June 4) at the Parque Olimpico. U-M graduate student Cameron Bock took sixth with a mark of 81.200.
The U.S. (248.600) finished second in the team competition behind host Brazil (251.450). Colombia (241.750) rounded out the top three. The American squad then declined to participate in the individual event finals on Sunday (June 6).
Juda's 83.000 on Friday led a U.S. contingent of four team members. Brazil's Caio Souza took the top spot with an 84.450. Juda had the third-best score of the day on floor exercise (14.300), while Bock had the second-highest pommel horse score (13.500).
The U.S. team also was coached by Michigan assistant coach Yuan Xiao.
Juda's top-two performance earned Team USA a +1 quota for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games, with the recipient of the spot to be named following the U.S. Olympic team trials. In addition to the four-person team, the U.S. will now be able to send one additional all-around gymnast or event specialist to compete in Tokyo.
Juda, Bock and the other members of Team USA are automatically qualified to compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, June 24-27 in St. Louis, Mo. The Wolverine duo will be joined at the trials by alumni Sam Mikulak and Adrian de los Angeles. Mikulak won the high bar and finished third in the all-around at this week's U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.
