NEW ORLEANS, La. -- A program-record 15 women from the University of Michigan track and field team were recognized Thursday (July 22) for their accomplishments in both athletics and academics with All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Wolverines excelled in competition this academic year with a runner-up Big Ten indoor finish, record numbers of qualifiers to the NCAA East Prelims and a strong contingent for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and many of those student-athletes also excelled in the classroom.
Michigan exceeded its previous highest single-year total of USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees by five, eclipsing the 10 award winners from the 2019 squad.
The Wolverines also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors for the 10th straight season.
All-Americans Katelynne Hart, Alice Hill, Ziyah Holman, Lucy Petee, Aurora Rynda and Ericka VanderLende all earned the academic honor to go along with their athletic achievements from the 2021 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Hill, Rynda and Katt Miner all earned the award for the third time in their careers.
Second-time honorees include Vanderlende and Meg Darmofal.
Winning the award for the first time in their careers were Lauren Fulcher, Hart, Holman, Jessi Larson, Mia Manson, Theresa Mayanja, Miner, Petee, Raquel Powers, Samantha Tran and Kayla Windemuller.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better and have met one of two athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
The quartet of Hill, Holman, Petee and Hart finished fifth in the distance medley relay at the NCAA Indoor Championships to log the Wolverines' best national finish of the campaign. Hill and Holman also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships individually in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 400 meters, respectively.
Holman was also a two-time Big Ten champion at 400 meters and broke three school records in her debut season.
VanderLende was a second-team All-American indoors at 5,000 meters and also qualified in that event to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Rynda was a second-team All-American outdoors at 800 meters after winning the Big Ten title in that event.
Larson also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at 10,000 meters.
