The Junior Pan American Championship is an international junior field hockey competition for men and women organized by the PAHF. Typically for under-21 athletes, the 2021 event's age cap was bumped to 22 to accommodate the pause in competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The women's tournament started in 1988. Argentina has won seven of the eight events, while the USA won in 2008. The top three women's teams will qualify for the 2021 FIH Junior Hockey World Cup.
Four Wolverines previously competed for Team USA at the Junior Pan Am Championship. April Fronzoni and Kristi Gannon contributed to a runner-up finish in 2000, while Mary Fox and Lori Hillman earned silver with the 2005 U.S. squad.
Oliveros, Southam, Peterson and Tamer will miss U-M's season-opening weekend at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge next Friday and Sunday (Aug. 28-29) in Iowa City, Iowa.
