ROCHESTER, Mich. -- With two seconds left on the clock, Declan Gaffney fired a shot that tipped off the fingers of the goalkeeper and Marc Ybarra crashed the net and buried the ball in the 110th minute to lift the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Oakland on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 29) at Oakland Soccer Field.
The Wolverines dominated offensively all game, outshooting the Golden Grizzlies 23-8, and putting eight shots on goal.
Ybarra and Quin Rogers scored their first goals of the season, while Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi recorded his first assist of the year. Freshman Hayden Evans earned his first career start and made two saves for the Maize and Blue.
Oakland fired first as a shot from outside the 18-yard box went into the far-right corner of the net to give the Golden Grizzlies an early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
With just two seconds left in the half, Al-Hasnawi fed a pass to Rogers, who ripped a shot from 19 yards out. The ball was too hot to handle for the keeper as it bounced off his finger tips and into the back of the goal to knot the score at 1.
Both teams played an even match for the start of the second half before Michigan generated multiple offensive opportunities. In the 50th minute, the Wolverines had three shots, and Evans came up with a big save on an Oakland shot to keep the game tied 1.
Less than 20 minutes later, U-M fired off another three shots in under a minute, but none found the back of the net. The Wolverines looked to end the game with just 20 seconds remaining but the ball sailed high, putting Michigan into its second overtime game of the young season.
U-M came out firing on all cylinders in the overtime period, taking four straight shots within the first two minutes with the keeper coming up with two huge saves for the Golden Grizzlies. With the score still tied at 1, Michigan went into its second double overtime in as many games.
The Wolverines continued to dominate in the final 10 minutes of the game and generate their offense. In the final five seconds of the game, Gaffney fired a shot inside the 18-yard box that was batted away by the keeper, and Ybarra finished it off to lift Michigan to its first victory.
The Wolverines will be back in action at home Thursday, Sept. 2 when they host Duke at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
