ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football team used a dominant rushing performance to leave Washington in the dust Saturday night (Sept. 11), riding the dynamic rushing duo of sophomore Blake Corum and senior Hassan Haskins to a 31-10 victory under the lights at Michigan Stadium.
Corum and Haskins led the Wolverines (2-0) with a combined 326 rushing yards and all four U-M touchdowns. The win gives the Maize and Blue an 8-2 all-time mark in night games at the Big House. It also improves U-M's record to 8-5 in the series against Washington, including a 4-1 mark at home.
Corum gave the Huskies fits on the night, finishing with a career-best 171 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns, while Haskins added an impressive 155 yards and a score of his own. The pair combined for 326 yards on the night.
Michigan's defense was impressive as well, highlighted by senior Aidan Hutchinson's 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble from Brad Hawkins. The Wolverines limited Washington to just 50 rushing yards in the contest and finished with four sacks.
With the score 3-0 in the second quarter -- thanks to a 52-yard Jake Moody field goal in the first quarter -- the Wolverines swung the momentum of a packed Michigan Stadium in their favor with a fake punt. Senior Michael Barrett gained a first down from three yards out to set up U-M's second scoring drive. Corum sprinted to a career-long 67-yard touchdown on the next play to give the U-M a 10-0 lead.
The Wolverines pushed their lead to 17-0 on their first drive of the second half, as Corum found the end zone from seven yards out for his second touchdown of the night with 10:52 remaining in the third quarter. After Washington ended U-M's shutout bid with a field goal five minutes later, Michigan responded with two more touchdowns in the fourth -- Haskins from six yards out at the 13:56 mark and Corum from four yards away with 1:48 left in regulation -- to put the game out of reach.
Corum's 171-yard performance means he has reached 100-plus rushing yards and recorded at least two touchdowns in consecutive games to start the season, and marks the most rushing yards in a single game since Haskins had 149 yards against Notre Dame (Oct. 26, 2019).
U-M will be in action again next Saturday (Sept. 18), when they host Northern Illinois for a noon kickoff at Michigan Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
