ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team finished off its four-game homestand with a 2-1 victory over Chicago State Monday night (Sept. 13) under the lights at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines (3-2-1) took 14 shots, six of which were on frame, with Kevin Buca scoring the game-winner and Declan Gaffney netting the first goal of his career. Sophomore Quin Rogers notched his third point of the season with the assist on Buca's goal.
The U-M defense gave up just three shots and a last-minute goal to Chicago State (2-3-1), and Owen Finnerty earned the win in goal.
Michigan lit up the scoreboard in the 21st minute of the match as Rogers sailed a long ball up the field to Buca, who made a lateral move into the 18-yard box before ripping a shot into the bottom third of the net for the goal.
Later in the half, Buca looked to extend the Wolverine lead to 2-0 as he got his foot on the ball in a scramble in front of the net, but the keeper was able to scoop the ball to keep the match at 1-0 in favor of Michigan.
U-M took eight shots with three on goal in the opening 45 minutes, while the Cougars did not manage a shot.
Michigan wasted no time extending its lead in the second half as a shot from Derick Broche rebounded out to Gaffney, who lined up a perfect shot into the upper right corner of the net in the 48th minute for his first career goal.
The Maize and Blue found a few more attempts in the second half, controlling the tempo of the match, before Chicago State snuck in its lone goal with less than a minute left on the scoreboard to break up the U-M shutout.
The Wolverines will hit the road for their first Big Ten Conference match of the 2021 season when they take on No. 7 Maryland at 6:30 p.m. Friday (Sept. 17) in College Park, Md. Fans can catch all the action live on Big Ten Network.
