COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fell to No. 8-ranked Maryland 2-1 in its first Big Ten Conference match of the 2021 season Friday night (Sept. 17) at Ludwig Field.
After a scoreless first half, UMD (5-1-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten) scored two quick goals in the second half before senior Derick Broche netted his second goal of the season for the U-M (3-3-1, 0-1-0 B1G) off a pass from Kevin Buca. The Maize and Blue was unable to put together another scoring chance as its comeback fell short.
U-M tallied six shots against the Terrapins, while freshman keeper Hayden Evans made a career-best saves against the high-powered Maryland team.
Michigan and Maryland exchanged possession for much of the first half, with the Terrapins finding the only shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. The Wolverines looked to make a few runs, but the Terrapin defense blocked some passes inside and kept the U-M off the scoreboard.
Ten minutes into the second half, Maryland earned a free kick outside of the 18-yard box that turned into a goal as it snuck in a shot into the lower-left corner of the net to take a 1-0 advantage.
Minutes later, Harry Pithers fired a shot from 22 yards out, but it went go wide and left before UMD added a second goal in the 63rd minute to extend its lead to 2-0.
The Wolverines continued to battle on the offensive end. A long throw in made it to the foot of Broche. He passed it out to Buca, who gathered the ball and sent it into the center of the box where a sliding Broche got his boot on the ball and placed it into the bottom-left side of the net to cut the Maryland lead to one in the 72nd minute.
U-M was unable to find the tying goal in the final 18 minutes of the match, falling in its first Big Ten Conference match of the season.
Michigan returns to Ann Arbor for a non-conference contest Tuesday (Sept. 21) at 7 p.m. when the Wolverines host Notre Dame at U-M Soccer Stadium.
