ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A second-half surge that included two goals propelled the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Loyola Chicago Monday (Sept. 6) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Junior Inaki Rodriguez scored the deciding goal in the 68th minute after receiving a pass from Jason Bucknor inside the 18-yard box. Fifth-year senior Marc Ybarra scored the tying goal for U-M just minutes before when he capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity.
As a team, Michigan outshot Loyola Chicago 9-4 and did not allow the Ramblers to take a single shot in the second half, dominating the possession. Freshman goalkeeper Hayden Evans played a big role in keeping the shot count to zero in the second half, scooping up what could have been a big scoring opportunity in the 64th minute to keep the score even at 1. Evans earned his second victory in his second career appearance for the Maize and Blue, making two saves.
Early on, Bryce Blevins looked to curl in a goal off a free kick, but the Loyola keeper got his fingertips before the Ramblers responded with a one-on-one opportunity in which they pushed the ball past Evans to assume a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the match.
With less than a minute and a half remaining in the opening stanza, Zeitz worked the ball away from a defender and fired a shot that sailed wide, sending U-M into the halftime break trailing 1-0.
Junior Uriel Zeitz came up big for the Wolverines in the 59th minute as he drew a foul at the top of the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Maize and Blue. Ybarra set up and fired a shot into the upper third of the net to knot the score at 1.
Michigan continued to pick up its tempo following the goal as Bucknor sent a pass into the 18-yard box to Rodriguez, who juked his defender and buried a goal into the top right corner of net to give U- M the 2-1 advantage in the 68th minute of the match.
The Wolverines kept Loyola Chicago off balance in the closing 20 minutes to earn their first home win and second overall victory of the season.
Michigan will face New Hampshire Friday (Sept. 10) at U-M Soccer Stadium starting at 7 p.m.
