Sharp Shooting Leads Michigan to Win at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team completed a dominant 80-62 win over Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 23) at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
The Wolverines shot a season-best 64.7percent (11-for-17) from three-point line and kept the Hoosiers to 26.3 percent (5-for-19). Michigan scored 28 of its points in the paint and converted 12 points off second-chance opportunities.
Sophomore Hunter Dickinson led the Michigan offense with 25 points and nine rebounds, finishing just shy of a double-double. Dickinson tied a career-high three triples after shooting 75 percent (3-for-4). Freshman Caleb Houstan scored a career-high 19 points after draining a career-best five three pointers (5-for-7). Freshman Moussa Diabate added another 10 points after shooting 6-for-7 from the free-throw line and sophomore Terrance Williams II scored 10 off the bench to record his third career double-figure scoring game.
Graduate student DeVante' Jones dished out a game-high seven assists and graduate student Eli Brooks claimed a team-high two steals. Senior Brandon Johns Jr. recorded one of the team's three blocks in his first action since Dec. 30.
Michigan (9-7, 3-3 Big Ten) quickly jumped to a 9-4 lead after a 7-0 scoring run heading into the first media timeout. Michigan extended its lead into double digits 17-7 at the 12:46 mark after Dickinson sank his first three-pointer of the game, and seventh of the season.
Michigan's advantage grew to a game-high 16 following back-to-back threes from Johns and Williams Ito make it a 29-13 score. Indiana (14-5, 5-4 Big Ten) made stops defensively and started to chip away at the U-M lead, making it an eight-point game at the intermission, 38-30.
The Wolverines began the second half with an explosive 12-2 run, regaining their biggest lead of the game, 52-36, with 15:54 left to play. After Houstan was whistled for a technical foul, the momentum swung as the Hoosiers went on a 7-0 run to cut the Wolverines lead to 52-43, forcing U-M to call a timeout at the 14:14 mark. Dickinson ended Indiana's run with his second three-pointer of the day, making it 55-43 with 13:07 left in the second half.
Michigan continued to find success beyond the arc as Houstan and Dickinson drained consecutive three-pointers halfway through the second half to increase U-M's advantage to 63-47. Dickinson recorded his 11th career 20+ point game with an emphatic dunk to make it 67-52 with 6:06 left.
The Hoosiers got within 11 points with 2:35 remaining, but Dickinson and the Wolverines continued to keep their foot on the gas as time expired. Houstan nailed his fifth three-pointer of the day to push the lead to 78-62 with 1:15 left remaining. Michigan ended on a 7-0 run capped off with a final bucket from freshman Frankie Collins to complete the 80-62 road win over Indiana.
The Maize and Blue returns to Crisler Center on Wednesday (Jan. 26) at 6:30 p.m., when it hosts Northwestern in their only regular-season matchup.
