ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team heads to the ITA Kick-Off on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 28-29) in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Wolverines take on host Wake Forest on Friday (Jan. 28) at 5 p.m., and either Notre Dame or Southern Methodist on Saturday (Jan. 29). The winner earns a bid to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan is 2-0 in dual-match action, with wins over Virginia Tech and Western Michigan and moves up one place to No. 16 in this week's ITA Coaches Poll
• The Wolverines are 11-2 in dual singles matches and 1-1 in winning the doubles point.
• Jacob Bickersteth is 2-0 at No. 3 singles, winning both matches in straight sets.
• Gavin Young won his seventh singles match last Friday (Jan. 21) and is now 13-3 on the year with wins at Nos. 4 and 5.
• Nino Ehrenschneider has wins at both No. 5 and 6 and is 8-3 this year.
• Patrick Maloney also is undefeated in singles play with wins at No. 2 and No. 4.
• Nine players are over .500 in doubles play this year, led by Andrew Fenty and a 10-2 record.
• Michigan won the ITA Kick-Off in 2020, topping Texas Tech and Ole Miss by matching 4-3 scores. The team went on to reach the semifinals of the National Indoor Championship with wins over Texas A&M and Texas before falling to No. 1 USC. The 2021 edition of the event, hosted at the Varsity Tennis Center, was canceled after one day due to the university entering a two-week U-M athletics pause.
Series History
• Michigan and Wake Forest are tied 6-6 in the all-time series, having last met in 2016 at the NCAA Regional in Winston-Salem. The Deamon Deacons advanced with a 4-2 win.
• Michigan holds a 48-32 advantage over Notre Dame in the all-time series and has won the last four meetings against the Fighting Irish. The last match was Feb. 23, 2020, a 4-3 Wolverines win.
• Michigan trails SMU 4-1 in the alltime series, but the Wolverines and Mustangs have not faced off since NCAAs in 1985.
