Wolverine Bites
• Graduate student Nick Suriano is 5-0 on the season with four bonus wins at 125 pounds. He earned back-to-back ranked wins against Ohio State's 18th-ranked Malik Heinselman (11-3, Jan. 14) and Penn State's seventh-ranked Drew Hildebrandt (2-1, Jan. 21). Suriano rolled to a 16-1 technical fall over Rutgers' Dylan Shawver in his most recent outing (Jan. 23). Suriano, who joined the Wolverine program as a grad transfer this semester, was the 2019 NCAA champion at 133 pounds while at Rutgers.
• Graduate student Patrick Brucki bumped up two spots to No. 6 in the latest InterMat rankings at 197 pounds. Brucki split a pair of overtime matches against top-10 opposition last weekend, defeating Rutgers' No. 6 Greg Bulsak 4-2 after sacrificing a late lead in a 6-4 loss to Penn State's No. 2 Max Dean. Brucki kicked off the New Year with another top-10 win, earning a 6-3 decision against Pittsburgh's No. 8 Nino Bonaccorsi, last year's NCAA runner-up at 197 pounds.
• Graduate student Logan Massa rallied to beat Ohio State's seventh-ranked Ethan Smith 10-5, using a third-period takedown, a four-point bow and arrow and riding time to earn his first ranked win of the season. Massa scored a first-period fall against Pitt's Hunter Kernan (2:18) in his dual debut the week before for his 100th career win at Michigan. He is now to 102-25 over six collegiate seasons and became the 38th Michigan wrestler to achieve the milestone.
• Two more Wolverines are bearing down on the 100-win milestone. Graduate student Stevan Micic owns a 95-15 record, while Brucki -- who spent his first three seasons at Princeton -- is now 94-19 in his collegiate career. Last season, Myles Amine became the 37th Wolverine wrestler to reach 100 wins and now boasts a 112-22 record.
• Myles Amine made his debut at the MatMen Open (Dec. 29-30), posting a 4-0 record en route to the 184-pound title and the tournament's outstanding wrestler honors. He defeated a familiar foe in NCAA champion and former Penn State standout Mark Hall 4-2 in the final, scoring the deciding points off a last-second takedown in the first period. It was Amine's first win over Hall; he went 0-5 against the Nittany Lion while both were in college -- all five matches were decided by a single point.

Scouting the Opponents
Minnesota: The Golden Gophers are 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in Big Ten duals after splitting their last competitive weekend with a win over Nebraska (19-13, Jan. 14), clinching it in the final match, before falling to Wisconsin (21-15, Jan. 16) at home two weeks ago. Nine Gopher wrestlers are ranked by InterMat, including five in the top 20 at their respective weights and most notably No. 1 Gable Steveson (Hwt), No. 4 Brayton Lee (157) and No. 9 Patrick McKee (125). Michigan holds a narrow 33-31-2 advantage in the all-time series against Minnesota, dating back to 1944. The Wolverines claimed four of the final five bouts to rally to a 22-15 win in the last series meeting in 2020 in Ann Arbor.
Maryland: The Terrapins enter the weekend with a 5-7 dual mark and are 0-3 in the Big Ten, most recently falling at Indiana (26-12, Jan. 21) and Ohio State (39-4, Jan. 23). Two Terps are ranked at their weight classes, most notably Kyle Cochran, who lists No. 11 at 184 pounds. The Wolverines lead 7-1-1 in the all-time series against Maryland with wins in the last five meetings, including a decisive 38-3 win on the road last season. Michigan took nine bouts in that dual, including pins from Drew Mattin (141) and Mason Parris (Hwt).
Last Time Out

Graduate student Nick Suriano and senior/junior Will Lewan claimed the lone U-M wins against the Nittany Lions and 125 and 157 pounds, respectively, while the final five matches, from 165 pounds to heavyweight, were decided by a combined 10 points. The Wolverines claimed eight match wins against Rutgers, earning bonus points in four, while graduate student Patrick Brucki claimed the marquee match with a 4-2 overtime decision against sixth-ranked Greg Bulsak at 197 pounds.
