ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan football team used a second-half surge, scoring 25 unanswered points highlighted by long touchdown runs in the third quarter from Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum, to earn a decisive 41-17 win against No. 10 Penn State on Saturday (Oct. 15) at Michigan Stadium. It was the Wolverines' first win over a ranked opponent this season and improved their record to a perfect 7-0.
Edwards and Corum combined for 339 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Edwards posted career highs in every category, rushing for 173 yards -- his first career 100-yard game -- and two touchdowns on 16 carries, while Corum carried the ball 28 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns. It was his fourth 100-yard game this season and the eighth of his career. He now has 13 touchdowns on the year after entering the game ranked second nationally in the category.
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy completed 17-of-24 passes for 145 yards -- just his second game this season without a passing touchdown -- while Jake Moody went 4-for-4 on field goals for his season high, kicking three in the first half and adding another in the fourth quarter.
Following a back-and-forth first half that saw U-M ahead 16-14, Penn State used a 27-yard field goal to retake a 17-16 lead early in the second before Michigan dominated the remainder of the game. Edwards and Corum keyed the surge with 60-plus yard touchdown runs in the third quarter.
Edwards went 67 yards into the end zone -- a career long -- and Michigan (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) completed the two-point conversion to go up 24-17 and take the lead for good. The Wolverines earned a stop on fourth down on their own 39 on the next PSU drive, and Corum broke off a 61-yard touchdown run on the next play.
Moody nailed a 37-yarder early in the fourth quarter for his longest field goal of the game before Edwards added his second touchdown with a three-yard rush -- contributing the final 45 yards of the drive -- with 5:03 to play to close out the game's scoring.
Michigan also was dominant early, holding Penn State (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) to just nine total yards through the first quarter and a half while building a 13-0 lead on a pair of short Moody field goals -- for 29 and 24 yards, respectively -- and a one-yard touchdown run from Corum that capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive early in the second quarter.
However, Penn State used a pair of big plays less than two minutes apart to steal the lead. The Nittany Lions answered the Wolverines' long touchdown drive with one of their own, going 75 yards on seven plays, including a 62-yard quarterback keeper on third-and-one before a one-yard touchdown rush. Five plays later, PSU intercepted a pass by McCarthy -- just his second interception this season -- and returned it 47 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
The teams traded the lead with short field goals on either side of halftime. Moody was good from 23 yards to give U-M a 16-14 edge with two seconds left in the first half before PSU opened scoring in the second with the 27-yarder for its final points of the contest.
After a bye week, U-M will host in-state rival Michigan State on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Michigan Stadium. Kickoff time and television coverage have not yet been announced.
