
Wolverines Collect 12 NCAA 'B' Cut Times on Final Day at Tennessee Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team ended the final day of the Tennessee Invitational on Saturday (Nov. 19), defeating Carson-Newman 186-123 but falling to No. 2 Virginia (244-142), host No. 15 Tennessee (200-189), and No. 17 North Carolina 196-192 at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
Kathryn Ackerman kicked things off with a second-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle final with a time of 16:16.18. Kathryn Shanley and Octavia Lau finished fifth and sixth in times of 16:22.39 and 16:25.80, respectively.
Casey Chung swam her way to a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.93. Noelle Kaufmann touched the wall in 1:57.01 for ninth place, while Mariella Venter (1:57.35) finished 11th, Malia Amuan (1:59.35) finished 12th and Sophia Tuinman (1:59.41) finished 17th.
Lindsay Flynn worked hard for a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, turning in a time of 48.13 -- just two-tenths of a second ahead of third place -- while Christey Liang swam a 48.77 to finish fifth. Both Flynn and Liang dropped time from their prelim swims times to finish in the top five. Claire Newman finished ninth in 48.99.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Letitia Sim touched the wall in sixth place in a time of 2:09.14. Devon Kitchel touched finished ninth, finishing first in the B-final with a time of 2:11.94.
Katie Crom swam to a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:57.44, and Megan Glass finished eighth, turning in a time of 2:20.10.
The team of Flynn, Liang, Newman and Crom closed out the weekend in Knoxville with a second-place swim in the 400 free relay, touching the wall second with a time of 3:14.98.
On the diving side, Lucy Hogan finished seventh on the platform with a score of 245.95, and Lauren Cheetham finished ninth with a score of 217.10.
The Tennessee Invite will be the last for the Wolverines until Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. when they take to the road to face Indiana at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington.
