ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team defeated the No. 18-ranked Northwestern Wildcats 162.5-137.5 on Saturday (Nov. 5) in Canham Natatorium.
The quartet of Casey Chung, Letitia Sim, Lindsay Flynn and Claire Newman kicked off the dual meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:39.39.
Christey Liang split a 27.52 in the last 50 yards of the 200-yard freestyle to claim a first-place finish with a time of 1:49.59, while Riley Francis touched the wall third with a time of 1:50.31.
Chung controlled the race from start to finish in the 100-yard backstroke, picking up her first individual win of the day with a time of 54.62, while Noelle Kaufmann touched second just behind Chung with a time of 54.85.
Flynn shot out of a cannon in the 50-yard freestyle and never looked back, touching first with a time of 22.63. Newman followed close behind with a second-place finish in 23.17.
Chung swam her way to her third first-place finish on the day in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:58.11. Mariella Venter finished third with a time of 2:01.80.
Sim was in control of the entire 200-yard breaststroke race down to the last touch, as she finished in first place with a time of 2:15.24, while Devon Kitchel touched third with a time of 2:17.91.
Katie Crom swam her way to victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:50.79 while Ackerman picked up the third-place finish.
In the 200 IM, Kitchel raced to a one and a half second victory with a time of 2:02.50. Sim touched second with a time of 2:04.08.
In the last event of action on the women's side, the team of Flynn, Newman, Brady Kendall and Kan finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.86.
In the diving events, Lucy Hogan finished second on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 278.63 and Lauren Cheetham finished third with a score of 262.80. Chrismon Clark finished second on the 1-meter springboard with 257.85 points.
Other top three finishers included Kathryn Ackerman and Kathryn Shanley in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Sim in the 100-yard breaststroke, Katie Crom and Ella Jo Piersma in the 200-yard butterfly, Flynn in the 100 free and Kaufmann and Natalie Kan in the 100-yard butterfly.
In total, Michigan won eight of the 16 events.
The Wolverines will return to the pool on Thursday (Nov. 17) in Knoxville, Tenn. at the Tennessee Invitational. The event is set for 10 a.m. at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
