Dickinson Captures 1,000th Career Point as U-M Defeats Purdue Fort Wayne in Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With 22 points and 12 rebounds from Hunter Dickinson and 21 points from Jett Howard, the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team defeated Purdue Fort Wayne, 75-56, on Monday (Nov. 7) in the 2022-23 season opener at Crisler Center.
First half: After finding themselves down 2-6 in the opening minutes of the game, the Wolverines (1-0) went on a 22-2 run midway through the first half to take a 24-8 lead with 10:53 to play. A balanced offensive attack and strong defense helped Michigan retain its lead throughout the half, and the Wolverines took a 40-28 lead into the halftime break. The Wolverines recorded four blocks and seven steals in the first half while forcing 12 turnovers and holding Purdue Fort Wayne to 35 percent shooting (11 of 31) from the field. Dickinson, who finished the first 20 minutes of action with 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks, eclipsed the 1,000 career points mark on a free throw late in the first half.
Second half: U-M opened the second half on a 19-7 run and extended their lead to 24 points. The team converted 8 of its first 11 field goal attempts and led 59-35 with 12:44 to play. From there, the Mastodons (0-1) responded with a 12-0 run of their own and cut the lead to 12 at the 8:05 mark. However, U-M was able to put the Mastodons away with a 10-0 scoring run that included eight points on two threes from freshman Jett Howard. Michigan outscored Purdue Fort Wayne 35-28 in the second half to win 75-56.
NOTES:
• Hunter Dickinson reached 1,000 career points on a free throw with 3:43 remaining in the first half. He is the 57th Wolverine to achieve this milestone.
• Dickinson finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season and his 18th overall. He is 18th all-time among Wolverines in career double-doubles and is one away from tying current head coach Juwan Howard in the record books.
• Dickinson is 8 rebounds away from becoming the 46th Wolverine to record 500 rebounds and the 37th to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career.
• Freshmen Jett Howard, Tarris Reed, Jr., Dug McDaniel, Gregg Glenn III and redshirt freshman Will Tschetter each recorded their first career points at the collegiate level.
• Graduate transfers Jaelin Llewellyn and Joey Baker posted their first points as Wolverines.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Wolverines will take on Eastern Michigan on Friday (Nov. 11) at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich. The game will mark Michigan's 30th all-time meeting with the EMU Eagles and the second at a neutral site.
