
Ryland Named Michigan Track and Field Assistant Coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan track and field director Kevin Sullivan announced Tuesday (Nov. 8) the hiring of Charnay Ryland as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
Ryland has more than eight years of coaching and recruiting experience, most recently serving as associate head coach at Lee University. After serving as assistant coach from 2016-20, she became associate head coach at Lee in May 2020. Prior to her time with Lee University, Ryland served as head track and field coach at Mount Anthony Union High School and assistant women's basketball coach at Southern Vermont College simultaneously.
During Ryland's time at Lee University, the women's track and field team earned four Gulf South Conference outdoor championship titles and three indoor championship titles. The men's team earned one GSC outdoor championship title and one indoor championship title. Ryland also coached seven individual athletes to a combined 14 first team All-Americans and eight second-team All-Americans, along with four first-team All-America relay honors. She was named the 2022 USTFCCCA South Region Men's Indoor Track & Field Assistant Coach of the Year after earning the same honor in 2018. Ryland also was selected South Region Assistant Coach of the Year in women's outdoor track and field.
Ryland's impressive athletic career focused on sprints and jumps, where she ran at Montgomery Junior College (Md.) and was a national champion, All-American and school record-holder in the triple jump, long jump and 4x100-meter relay. After her time at Montgomery, Ryland went on to Montreat College (N.C.) where she was an All-American and national champion, setting a school record in the triple jump. Ryland was a multi-sport athlete playing basketball at Montgomery and Montreat.
After graduating with a degree in communications from Montreat College in 2015, Ryland went on to earn her master's of education in higher education from Lee University in 2018. She was inducted into the Montreat College Hall of Fame in 2022.
Outside of her coaching career, Ryland has served as a dental tech in the U.S. Air Force Reserve since 2020.
