CHICAGO, Ill. -- In its best performance of the 2022 indoor season so far, the University of Michigan men's track and field team racked up a new school record, three event wins and two sub-four-minute miles on the final day of competition at the Wisconsin Windy City Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 12).
First-year phenom Miles Brown took down his second school record of the year -- this time from an Olympian -- and brought along Cole Johnson to an all-time fast time of his own at 800 meters; milers Nick Foster and Oli Raimond both cracked into three-minute territory; and the Wolverines got wins from Joshua Zeller (60-meter hurdles), Dubem Amene (400 meters) and the 4x400 relay.
In one of the fastest performances in Big Ten history, Brown ran 1:47.37 for the runner-up spot on the 200-meter hydraulic banked track at the Track and Field Center at Gately Park, eclipsing the nearly 17-year-old U-M standard of 1:47.51 held by Olympian Nate Brannen.
Johnson was hot on his heels in fifth with a 1:47.60 effort that ranks No. 3 in school history.
Both men aggressively stuck with the hot pace from a field that included 3:50 miler Cooper Teare, and Brown was able to close fast enough to hold off a hard-charging Teare on the final straightaway.
Brown now ranks No. 11 in Big Ten indoor history with the performance, and Johnson checked in at No. 15. The performances will put them on the inside edge of the bubble for qualification to the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Foster at 3:58.49 and Raimond at 3:59.47 became the first Michigan teammates to go sub-four-minutes in the mile since the trio of Ned Willig, Connor Mora and Will Sheeran accomplished the feat in 2017.
Foster moved to No. 7 in school history, while Raimond missed the all-time top-10 by just 0.07 seconds.
Running from the front right from the start, Foster held sub-four-minute pace and led the field through about 1,500 meters before being overtaken by a Wisconsin runner, but was able to maintain his composure and finish strong to ensure his spot in Michigan history.
Foster closed hard with a 28.32-second circuit around the 200-meter oval, but it was Raimond who had the faster kick of the two with a 27.80 final lap.
Austin Remick took another chunk out of his personal record to take sixth in 4:02.72.
It was all Michigan in the next two men's finals on the track, sandwiched by the historic run by Brown and Johnson.
Zeller won the 60-meter hurdles by more than a quarter of a second in 7.77, just .01 off his personal best from earlier this season. He opened the day with a 7.82 showing in the prelims.
In the subsequent invitational section of the 400 meters, Amene went sub-47 seconds for the second meet in a row as he clocked 46.64 -- just 0.18 seconds off his PR and 0.22 off the school record -- to win by nearly a full second.
Brown and Amene returned to the track to contribute another victory to the cause as the Wolverines took the 4x400 relay at the line in 3:11.53. Brown ran the second leg with a 46.87 carry to bring the Wolverines to third, Lawrence Gilliam ran 48 seconds to get the Wolverines to a dead heat in second, and Amene went 46.40 to take the race by just over half a second.
Headlining the action in the field was third-place pole vaulter Henry Sheldon with a career-best 5.06m (16 feet, 7.25 inches) clearance and fifth-place triple jumper Bera Ajala at 14.98m (49-1.75).
Beyond hosting its regular-season-finale tune-up meet, the Silverston Invitational, at the U-M Indoor Track Building on Friday (Feb. 18), Michigan looks ahead to the Big Ten Indoor Championships, which will be held Feb. 25-26 in Geneva, Ohio.
