
Michigan Sets Two Meet Records, Finishes as Runner-Up at B1G Championships

MADISON, Wis. -- Behind two meet records in Saturday's (Feb. 19) final session, the University of Michigan women's swim and dive team finished in second place at the 2022 Big Ten Championships at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center. Ohio State captured the team title with 1,303 points.
Senior Maggie MacNeil was named the Big Ten Championships Swimmer of the Meet for the third time, winning three individual titles and two relay titles. MacNeil, along with Lindsay Flynn, Claire Newman, and Olivia Carter set a Big Ten meet record with a 3:09.84 in the 400-yard freestyle relay to win the title for the fifth straight time. Carter set a meet record of her own in the 200-yard butterfly (1:15.83).
U-M had nine top-10 finishes Saturday, with Carter and MacNeil leading the way. In addition to Carter, MacNeil won her third individual title, swimming the 100-yard freestyle in 47.10 seconds and earning an NCAA 'A' cut.
Kathryn Ackerman and Kaitlynn Sims earned the first podium finishes, with Ackerman finishing seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle and Sims coming in eighth overall.
In the 200 backstroke, Casey Chung swam an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:54.80 to place sixth overall, while sophomores Noelle Kaufmann and Sophie Housey swam NCAA 'B' cut times to finish 13th and 15th, respectively, in the event.
Flynn placed sixth overall in the 100 free, touching the wall in 48.26 seconds, good for an NCAA 'B' cut, while Newman (48.46) rounded out Michigan's top-10 finishers.
Freshman Letitia Sim led Michigan in the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming an NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:08.74 for a sixth-place finish.
Carter closed out the swimming portion of the championships with her meet record in the 200 fly. Senior Victoria Kwan placed sixth overall with a time of 1:55.73.
Michigan divers will be back in action Monday through Wednesday (March 7-9) at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships at Canham Natatoruim. The NCAA Championships will take place Wednesday through Saturday, March 16-19 in Atlanta, Ga.
