SOUTH BEND, Ind -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out its 2022 indoor regular season in style at the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 19) with one of the fastest distance medley relay performances in its history.
The quartet of Alice Hill, Savannah Sutherland, Aurora Rynda and Samantha Tran combined to run 10:59.46 to place fourth in a competitive field and put themselves in position to earn a 19th appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the past 20 seasons.
Hill, Sutherland and Rynda combined to give the Wolverines a more-than-three-second advantage after their respective 1,200-, 400- and 800-meter legs in 6:20.7, and Tran brought it home with a 4:38.76 carry over the final 1,600 meters.
The time ranks eighth in school history and No. 10 in the nation this year, inside the 12-team bubble for qualifying to the NCAA Championships. With only conference championships weekend remaining, when most schools have their top distance medley relay performers entered in individual events to maximize point output, making it less likely the Wolverines will be passed by in the standings.
Additionally, Kayla Windemuller won the mile in 4:44.81 and Amber Gall ran 2:10.05 for seventh at 800 meters.
With the regular season now completely in the rearview mirror, the Wolverines will head to Geneva, Ohio, for the Big Ten Indoor Championships next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26).
