Michigan will be playing in its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament dating back to 2016. It should be noted the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Wolverines have advanced to the Sweet 16 in each of their last four NCAA Tournaments and reached the Final Four and national title games in 2013 (Atlanta) and 2018 (San Antonio).
Playing one of the strongest schedules in the nation, the Wolverines head to the NCAAs with a 17-14 overall record with an 11-9 mark in Big Ten Conference play. U-M has been led all season by All-Big Ten (second team) sophomore Hunter Dickinson, who leads the Wolverines in scoring (18.3) and rebounding (8.3) for a second straight season. Coming back for a fifth year after the NCAA granted an additional year due COVID-19, graduate student Eli Brooks has had a career year with his 12.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
Fellow graduate student DeVante' Jones, a transfer from Coastal Carolina, leads U-M in assists (144, 4.6 apg) and adds 10.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Freshman Caleb Houstan gives the Wolverines four players in double figures with his 10.5 points a game. He adds a team-best 56 three-pointers and 4.0 rebounds per game.
U-M's David and Meredith Kaplan men's basketball head coach Juwan Howard is taking his team to a second straight NCAA Tournament trip. Last season, the Wolverines advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight before falling 50-48 to UCLA in the regional final. As a player, Howard was part of three NCAA Tournament teams.
From arguably the strongest conference in the nation, Michigan is joined in the field of 68 by eight other Big Ten schools:
• No. 3 seed Purdue (East)
• No. 3 seed Wisconsin (Midwest)
• No. 4 seed Illinois (South)
• No. 5 seed Iowa (Midwest)
• No. 7 seed Michigan State (West)
• No. 7 seed Ohio State (South)
• No. 11 seed Rutgers (West)
• No. 12 seed Indiana (East)
It marks back-to-back years with nine selections for the Big Ten. Last season, the conference's nine NCAA Tournament teams topped the league's prior best of eight selected in 2019.
