Michigan Secures Comeback Win at No. 5 Illinois with Big Move on Parallel Bars

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team defeated the No. 5 Illinois Fighting Illini in ferocious comeback fashion, winning by a 411.850-408.400 score Sunday (March 13) at Illinois' Huff Hall.
Michigan (11-1, 2-1 B1G) trailed by 4.85 points after the second rotation and was still behind going into the fifth rotation, but the Wolverines' 6.8-point advantage on parallel bars helped secure the victory.
Junior Paul Juda captured a trio of titles, winning vault (14.85), high bar (14.45) and the all-around (85.000). Additional event wins came from sophomore Chris Read on still rings (14.05) and sophomore Evgeny Siminiuc on parallel bars (14.30).
As a team, U-M won four of six events, with the lone exceptions coming on pommel horse and high bar.
U-M began the meet with a 69.250 on floor exercise but faltered on pommel horse in the second rotation with a 64.350. The Wolverines trailed by 4.85 points after the second rotation, 3.6 points after still rings in the third rotation, and 3.25 points after vault in the fourth.
The big move for the Maize and Blue came in the fifth rotation, as U-M completed the comeback with 68.550 on parallel bars as the Illini (7-2, 1-1 B1G) faltered with a 61.750. The Wolverines led by 3.55 points going into the final rotation on high bar, where the Wolverines hit all six routines to seal the win.
U-M hit 93 percent (28 of 30) as a team and stuck six routines.

Michigan returns home to close out the regular season on Friday (March 18), hosting Penn State at 7 p.m. in a matchup that will be broadcast via Big Ten Network. The program will also honor longtime former head coach Kurt Golder as well as its departing senior class and esteemed alumni.
