BALTIMORE, Md. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team opened its 2022 Big Ten Conference season with a 9-7 road win at No. 18 Johns Hopkins Friday afternoon (March 18) at Homewood Field. U-M scored the game's final three goals to pick up the victory.
The win is Michigan's second of the season over a ranked opponent as it topped then-No. 5 Notre Dame in week one.
Four Wolverines netted two goals each in the win as Caroline Davis, Erin Garvey, Kaitlyn Mead and Kaley Thompson all scored a pair of goals and Julia Schwabe added one.
U-M won the draw control 12-8 with Kaitlyn Mead winning three while Josie Gooch, Hailey Mead and Morgan Whitaker all won two draws.
Defensively, Whitaker had five ground balls and Thompson had two caused turnovers, while Arielle Weissman made seven saves in the cage.
Garvey opened up the scoring less than two minutes into the game, but JHU answered with two straight goals to take the 2-1 advantage. Kaitlyn Mead evened the score as she took the ball off the draw, raced down the field, and fired the ball into the top of the cage. Garvey then netted her second of the day with 54 seconds left in the first quarter to allow the Wolverines to take a 3-2 lead after one complete quarter.
Each team added one goal in the second quarter, and Michigan went into the half with a 4-3 advantage. Garvey and Kaitlyn Mead scored two goals each, and the Wolverines won the draw 6-3 in the opening half.
A Davis free position with 11:11 left in the third quarter put Michigan up 5-3, but once against the Blue Jays had an answer as they scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 5 with just over seven minutes remaining. Thompson netted the sixth goal of the game for the Maize and Blue with 3:17 left in the third quarter, allowing U-M to go into the final 15 minutes of play with a 6-5 advantage.
Johns Hopkins continued to score in pairs as it took a 7-6 lead early in the fourth quarter but a Schwabe take tied the score at 7 with 9:02 left on the clock. Following a Hopkins timeout, Thompson came through with another important goal as she ripped what turned out to be the game-winner into the back of the cage with 5:05 left to play.
Michigan tacked on one final insurance goal with under three minutes left.
The Wolverines will be back in action at noon Sunday (March 20) when they travel to Villanova for a non-conference contest against the Wildcats.
