ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team (22-5) grabbed the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse this weekend (March 4-6) in Indianapolis, Ind. U-M received one of four double-byes into the quarterfinals and will face No. 6 seed Nebraska on Friday (March 4) at approximately 9 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
Wolverine Notes
• Michigan finished the Big Ten season with a 13-4 record, 0.5 games behind first-place Ohio State and Iowa. Michigan and Maryland each finished with 13-4 records after both missing a game against Illinois to tie for third place, with Michigan getting the No. 3 seed after sweeping the Terps in the regular season. It marks the fourth time in the last six seasons that U-M has finished in the top four of the conference and earned a double-bye into the quarterfinals.
• U-M tied the program record for conference wins, winning 13 Big Ten games. It marked the fifth double-digit win season for the Wolverines under head coach Kim Barnes Arico, accounting for half of Michigan's double-digit win seasons in program history. U-M is 98-67 (.594) in Big Ten play under KBA, as she is one of only two coaches in program history to be over .500 in conference action (Sue Guevera, .509). Michigan's winning percentage in conference play prior to Barnes Arico's arrival in 2012 was .304. She was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year by the coaches and media for the second time this season, making her the only coach in program history to win the award twice.
• Michigan took home plenty of honors from the Big Ten, with head coach Kim Barnes Arico earning her second Coach of the Year nod to highlight the awards. Naz Hillmon (first team, all-defense), Leigha Brown (second team), Laila Phelia (all-freshman), Maddie Nolan (honorable mention) and Emily Kiser (honorable mention) were each recognized.
• The Big Ten Tournament marks the first time back in Indiana this season for Michigan's quintet of Hoosier State natives - Amy Dilk (Carmel), Leigha Brown (Auburn), Emily Kiser (Noblesville), Maddie Nolan (Zionsville) and Ari Wiggins (Indianapolis). All five of the Wolverines were members of the Indiana All-Star Team, with Dilk earning Miss Basketball honors in 2018.
• Leigha Brown made her return to the lineup last time out, playing 13 minutes at No. 21 Iowa (Feb. 27) after missing five games due to an injury. She went for nine points, two boards and four assists in her return. On the season, Brown is averaging 14.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. She has 16 double-figure scoring games on the season, highlighted by a trio of 20-point performances.
• Naz Hillmon is three points away from passing former teammate Hallie Thome for second on the career scoring list. Hillmon enters the weekend with 2,079 points, with Thome finishing her career with 2,081.
• Michigan will play the final game of quarterfinal Friday (March 4), facing No. 6 seed Nebraska. U-M fell at Nebraska in early January before ripping off eight straight wins.
