
Thompson's Hat Trick Not Enough in B1G Road Contest at 14th-Ranked Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-8 decision to No. 14 Rutgers on the road Thursday afternoon (March 31) at SHI Stadium.
The Wolverines (9-3, 1-2 B1G) fell behind in the first quarter and were never able to overcome the deficit against the Scarlet Knights (10-1, 2-1 B1G). The game's start was moved up four hours to 3 p.m. due to anticipated inclement weather.
Senior Kaley Thompson led the U-M offense with her fourth hat trick of the season, while Erin Garvey paced Michigan on the draw with three wins.
Defensively, Annabelle Burke and Julia Schwabe had two caused turnovers each, and five different Wolverines picked up two ground balls apiece. Graduate student Arielle Weissman played all 60 minutes in the cage with four saves.
Thompson lit up the scoreboard first in the contest at Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knights responded with a three-goal run to take a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes of action. The senior attacker brought Michigan within one to start the second quarter, netting her second of the day on a free position.
Rutgers used four goals from Taralyn Naslonski to go up 7-4 before Claire Galvin found one final goal with 16 seconds left in the half to bring Michigan within two, 7-5, heading into the halftime break.
Once again Thompson got U-M on the scoreboard to start the third quarter, pulling Michigan within one, 7-6, with just over 13 minutes on the clock. However, Rutgers scored two more goals to close out the quarter with a 9-6 advantage.
RU continued its run into the fourth quarter, scoring an additional two goals to extend its lead to 11-6 before Burke ripped a shot into the lower part of the cage for Michigan with 7:13 to play. With U-M trailing by five following a Rutgers goal with under five minutes left, Kaitlyn Mead netted one on a free position, but the Wolverines were unable to overcome the deficit as the Scarlet Knights added one final goal.
The Wolverines will continue their home schedule Sunday (April 3) when they play a non-conference contest against No. 17-ranked USC at noon at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Admission is free to all U-M regular-season home games.
