SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- With the second round suspended due to darkness, the University of Michigan men's golf team used a 289 (+1) first-round tally today (Saturday, March 5) and are tied for fifth in the 16 team field at the Desert Mountain Collegiate at the Outlaw Course.
After a year away from hosting due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Wolverines returned to Scottsdale to host the seventh annual Desert Mountain event. With two Maize and Blue squads competing the 'A' team used 20 birdies to tally a 289 (+1) total in the first round to position itself tied for fifth after 18 holes. With three Wolverines having 2-3 holes remaining in the second round, U-M is still in the fifth position when play was called.
Leading U-M with seven birdies in the first round, sophomore Will Anderson carded a 69 (-3) and put himself tied for fifth with four other golfers. Continuing his strong play during the spring break trip, graduate student Brendan O'Reilly posted four birdies to card a 71 (-1) move among the top 20 as he was 17th after the first 18 holes. He has three rounds of par or better in his four so far during his spring break events.
Freshman Hunter Thomson had five birdies of his own and closed at even-par 72, tying him for 31st. For U-M 'B' team, freshman Bavake Sihota recorded four birdies and an eagle as he opened with a 70 (-2) and was tied for 10th.
The Wolverines and the other 15 teams will return in the morning to finish the second round before immediately continuing into the final round. The field will remain in the same pairings from Saturday.
