COLUMBUS, Ohio. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis epic run came to a halt on Friday (April 15) at No. 2 Ohio State in a 4-1 decision. It marks the Wolverines' first loss in the B1G and just third loss of the season as Michigan's 13-0 streak is halted -- the program's longest win streak since 1988.
The Wolverines ended the match winning the doubles point in the last 12 matches and taking it in 16 of 18 matches. The Buckeyes' No. 1-ranked pair of Matel Vocel and Robert Cash took a 7-5 match from No. 23 Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider. Leading 5-4, Fenty/Ehrenschneider lost the next three sets -- just their fourth loss of the season. No. 25 Ondrej Styler and Gavin Young lost their first match in three matches, 6-4, at No. 3 to Andrew Lutschaunig and Justin Boulais.
The teams split first sets in singles, 3-3, but OSU was able to gain a 3-0 lead with wins at both No. 2 and 5 in straight sets. The other four matches were pushed to three sets.
No. 46 Jacob Bickersteth put Michigan on the board winning at No. 5. After dropping the first set, 6-2, he took a 6-4 second set to keep U-M's hopes alive as he won the last two points to push it to a third. He never trailed in the final set, taking the 6-1 wins to improve to 12-2 in dual singles.
No. 25 Ondrej Styler did not trail in his 6-3 first set to No. 11 Cannon Kingsley. The two went back-and-forth in the second set with Kingsley taking the final two games after being tied at 4-4 to push it to a deciding match. Tied at 2-2, Kingsley strung together four straight games for the 6-2 match point. It marked Styler's first loss in the B1G this season and snapped a 10-match win streak.
Nick Beaty and Patrick Maloney's matches at No. 6 and No. 3, respectively, were left unfinished.Â
