BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan rowing team officially welcomed Charlie Carino of Southfield, Michigan, to its team in partnership with Team IMPACT, the program announced on Friday (April 22).
Charlie signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Wolverines in a ceremony following the team's races against Texas (April 9) at the U-M Boathouse at Belleville Lake. Charlie will be part of the team, attending team functions, practices and regattas. She will also spend time with the team off the water, interacting with student-athletes through team dinners, movie nights and more.
"Having Charlie join our team is a special occasion," said head coach Mark Rothstein. "She has already proven to be an exemplary Wolverine and someone who shows others what our program is all about: TEAM. It was such a pleasure having Charlie and her dad, Dominic, at our races earlier this month and we look forward to spending more time with the whole Carino family. Welcome to Michigan Rowing, Charlie!"
Charlie lives with epilepsy but still maintains an active lifestyle. She loves riding her bike, going to the beach, watching sports with her dad and dancing. She is excited to join the Michigan Rowing program to meet new teammates and learn about their skills on the water. Charlie's strength and determination make her the perfect fit with the Wolverines.
The Carino family learned of Team IMPACT through Charlie's speech-language therapist in the University of Michigan Medical system.
"We thought it would be a positive thing for Charlie," said Charlie's mother, Felicia Carino. "And we are so thankful that she has been given this opportunity. It's something that can help her be more comfortable socializing and talking more. She is nervous and shy, but is happy being around the team and will open up even more as she continues to get to know them."
Grand Haven, Michigan, native Olivia McMullen shared why having Charlie as part of the Michigan Rowing Program is meaningful to the Wolverine roster.
"Everyone is really excited to have Charlie as part of our team," said McMullen. "I think it is important to show young girls what they can do, and I hope we can help inspire her the same way she inspires us. Her toughness shows that same athlete mindset that we have and that makes her a perfect fit for our team."
Charlie's family includes her father, Dominic, mother, Felicia, and sister, Dylan.
