DES MOINES, Iowa --Â The University of Michigan men's track and field team kicked off three days of competition at the Drake Relays on Thursday night (April 28), headlined by a series of top-10 finishes in the distance races.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Christian Hubaker led the way with an eighth-place finish in 8:55.86. The second-team All-American was running as high in the field as third place with three laps to go, but could not hold the pace, which could have put him near a personal best.
In the lower-seeded section, Joe Meyers took the win in a career-best 9:05.64 for 13th overall.
The Wolverines got a pair of top-10 finishes in the seeded section of the 5,000 meters to close out the night. Oli Raimond moved up through the pack from 15th early to eighth at the line in 14:05.70, just ahead of ninth-place Tom Brady, who ran from the front early and held on, in 14:06.99.
Earlier in the evening in the unseeded sections of the 1,500 meters, the Wolverines posted a pair of top-eight finishes with seventh-place Will Landowne in 3:45.28 and eighth-place Anthony DeKraker in a career-best 3:45.67. For DeKraker, he has now slashed nearly four seconds off his personal best from last year.
Friday, the busiest day of the weekend for the Wolverines, begins at 11:45 a.m. CT with an early session of action. An evening session begins around 5:30 p.m. CT.
