
Michigan Downs Northwestern to Claim 11th Straight Victory

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 6 ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over No. 25 ranked Northwestern on Sunday (April 3) afternoon, marking its 11th consecutive win and improving to 14-2 overall.
At 4-0 in Big Ten play, the Wolverines sit in first place in the conference standings.
The Wolverines continued their hot streak in doubles, winning the point for the 14th time this season. Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty clinched the point at No. 2 doubles for their ninth straight win with a 7-6 (7) victory. On Court 3, No. 21 ranked Ondrej Styler and Gavin Young picked up a 7-6 (7) win.
Styler, ranked No. 27 nationall in singles, made it 2-0 Michigan as he captured a two-set win at No. 1 singles over former Wolverine Steven Forma, 6-3, 7-5. Styler's eighth straight win was his 10th victory of the spring season.
Presley Thieneman got the Wildcats on the board at No. 4 singles with a win over No. 43-ranked Jacob Bickersteth, 6-2, 7-5.Â
Shortly thereafter, Gavin Young earned his sixth straight win, taking down Felix Nordby 6-2. 7-6 at No. 5 singles. Young is now 21-6 in singles play this year.
Nino Ehrenschneider clinched the match for Michigan at No. 6 singles, besting Brian Berdusco in three sets. Ehrenschneider took a 6-3 first set before dropping the second, 6-4. After going down 0-1 in the third, he rattled off six straight points for the 6-1 win and the match.
Playing out, Northwestern earned another point at No. 2 singles before No. 122-ranked Patrick Maloney pushed Michigan's score to 5-2. It marked his eighth-straight win at No. 3. After going down 6-4 in the first set, Maloney came back to win matching 6-3 sets and take the match over Trice Pickens.
The Wolverines will look to stay atop the conference standings when they return home and take on Purdue on Saturday (April 9). The match will be held at the Varsity Tennis Center at noon.
