FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- Using one of four sub-par second round totals (71, -1), graduate student Brendan O'Reilly jumped 18 positions today (Saturday, April 30) and moved into a tie for sixth. His tally helped the University of Michigan men's golf team post a second straight 303 team total as the Wolverines remained 13th (606) after day two of the Big Ten Championship at the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort.
With strong winds hiking second-round scores up over a shot and a half from day one, the Wolverines got out of the gates strong holding the day's best team score through 10 holes. With the winds and threats of storms, U-M was unable to keep its first-half momentum as the Wolverines closed at 303 and to stay 13th.
Using three birdies, O'Reilly guided the Maize and Blue for a second straight day carding a 71 (-1) -- his fourth sub-par tally of the season. In fact, O'Reilly was one of four golfers to score in the red on day two. With his 144 (E) 36-hole total, he vaulted himself 18 positions and is now tied for sixth in his first Big Ten Championships.
After playing two-under through his first 10 holes, freshman Hunter Thomson bogeyed six of his last eight holes to close with a 76, putting him tied for 46th (153). Sophomore Will Anderson gave the Wolverines three among the top 50 as he is tied for 50th at 154 (78-76).
After opening with a 276 (-12), Michigan State battled the winds and etched a 301 on the leaderboard to hold just a one-shot lead (577) heading into the final round. Illinois is second at 578 (286-292) and Purdue is third at 582 (287-295). U-M will close its championship playing with Ohio State and Nebraska off the 10th tee at 8:45 a.m.
