MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 7 ranked University of Michigan swept Illinois 4-0 on Saturday (April 30) in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals and will play for the B1G Tournament championship on Sunday. It will be the fourth time the Wolverines have reached the title tilt, and they will face off against foe Ohio Sate at noon CT on B1G+
Dominant in doubles, the Wolverines won their 21st doubles point up against three-ranked pairs of Illini. Ondrej Styler and Nino Ehrenschneider fell behind to No. 77 Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve, and could only get within two as Illinois won 6-3.
Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty kept their win streak alive taking their 13th consecutive doubles win as they knocked off No. 90 Alex Brown and Gabrielus Guzauskas. Tied at 3-3, the duo took two straight points and finished them off 6-4.
Andrew Fenty and Gavin Young clinched the point with a 6-3 win over No. 82 Siphosothando Montsi and Olivier Stuart 6-3 and running up a 4-1 edge.
No. 61-ranked Jacob Bickersteth claimed his sixth straight singles win and pushed Michigan ahead 2-0. He took the first set 6-2 after leading 4-1. Brown put up a battle in the second, with the set tied at 3-3 before Bickersteth rattled off three straight points for the 6-3 victory.
Sporting the best singles streak on the squad, Ehrenschneider won his ninth straight in straight sets. He was on fire in the first set, winning 6-1 and never trailed in the second though Nic Meister put up a fight. Tied at 5-5 Ehrenschneider won two straight games to push Michigan ahead 3-0 in the team score.
Styler clinched the match for the Wolverines at No. 1 topping Heck by matching 6-4 scores. It marked his 20th singles win of the season and fourth straight victory. Down 3-2 in the first, Styler won two straight games to take a 4-3 lead. Heck took the next game but Styler ripped off two back-to-back for the 6-4 win. It was a nearly identical story in the second set, trailing 3-2, winning two to take the lead and never relinquished it in the victory for Michigan.
