DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team excelled on the second day of competition at the Duke Invitational on Friday (April 8), accumulating nine top-10 finishes in top-seeded sections.
Amanda Schaare in the shot put, Ameia Wilson in the long jump and Samantha Tran at 1,500 meters all posted runner-up finishes in their respective events to lead the way for the Wolverines, bolstering their positions as conference and regional contenders.
In the shot put, the duo of Schaare and Corinne Jemison went 2-3 in the overall standings. Schaare twice surpassed 16 meters, topping out at an outdoor career-best 16.07 (52-8.75) on her first throw to improve her standing at No. 3 in school history by two centimeters.
Jemison made the final on a clutch third-and-final trials attempt 15.30m (50-2.5), and improved on her sixth attempt out to 15.54m (51-0). Both women are entered in Saturday's discus competition, as well. Jemison will be looking for her second consecutive meet with marks greater than 15.50m and 50,00m in the shot put and discus, respectively, and Schaare will be going for her first. Only two other women in school history -- Melissa Bickett three times and Emily Pendleton four -- have ever notched those marks in the same meet.
Michigan was every bit as strong in the long jump, where Wilson was second overall and Riley Ammenhauser was fourth. Jumping for the first time since her near-school-record outing last month, Wilson was again strong as she leapt out to 6.14m (20-1.75) among three marks measuring six meters or farther.
Ammenhauser moved up to No. 10 in school history with her 5.95m (19-6.25) on her first attempt in the second of three flights, and that mark stood up for the next hour of competition for fourth.
Michigan got another runner-up finish from Tran in the invitational section of the 1,500 meters. She crossed the line in 4:20.14, closing hard with the second-fastest last lap in the entire field after coming through halfway in fifth place. Also finishing top-10 for the Wolverines were sixth-place Ericka VanderLende in 4:23.28 and seventh-place Katelynne Hart in 4:24.82.
The time puts Tran in strong position to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds later this spring, reserved for the top-48 individuals per event in the East Region.
Already in the top-10 all-time in the heptathlon, Theresa Mayanja completed a strong 2022 debut in the seven-event competition with a 5,005-point performance for fifth place. Chief among her performances on Friday was a significant career-best heave in the javelin, adding nearly five meters to her personal record at 40.60m (133-2) and moving to No. 6 in school history in the event.
Clare McNamara was impressive in her collegiate heptathlon debut with a score of 4,853 points, just outside the all-time top-10 in the event.
Competing in an unseeded section of the pole vault, Cate Visscher tied for the win with a 3.85m (12-7.5) clearance. Also winning in unseeded competition was Samantha Hastie at 1,500 meters, who won in a career-best 4:27.20.
Saturday's final day of competition begins at 9:30 a.m. with field events. Action on the track begins at noon and will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra digital platform.
