WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan baseball team earned a split of a Big Ten Conference doubleheader against Purdue on Sunday (May 1) at Alexander Field. The Boilermakers took game one by a score of 12-4 before Michigan came roaring back in the nightcap to win 13-2.
Following a loss in the first game of the day, Michigan (23-18, 9-5 B1G) responded in the nightcap with a six-run second inning. Dylan Stanton, Ted Burton and Clark Elliott collected RBI singles before Joe Stewart launched a three-run homer well over the left field wall to provide an early cushion.
Michigan opened the game in the fifth with five more runs as Elliott drove home two with a bases-loaded single while Jimmy Obertop, Stanton and Joey Velazquez all added RBI singles.
That was plenty for U-M starter Chase Allen, who improved to 6-0 on the season after allowing just one earned run on five hits in 8.0 innings of work while striking out three. Jacob Denner closed out the win in the ninth.
Stanton capped an impressive weekend with his fourth hit of the night in the ninth inning. The two-run homer to left center -- and his first career home run -- gave U-M a 13-2 lead.
In addition to Stanton's four hits in game two of the twinbill, Tito Flores added three hits for U-M while Elliott and Stewart had two hits and three RBIs each.
Purdue (25-14, 6-7 B1G) claimed the opening game by a score of 12-4. Purdue scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second and jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four innings despite starting pitcher Cameron Weston racking up seven strikeouts in that span.
Michigan scored twice in the fifth inning on a pair of RBI groundouts following a hit batter and an opposite-field double from Jack Van Remortel. Purdue got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Velasquez ended the momentum when he cut down a run at home plate following a two-out single.
That momentum was short-lived, however, as Purdue broke open the game in the sixth inning with six runs against the U-M bullpen. Frey led Michigan in the first game of the day with two hits while Riley Bertram contributed a two-run double in the eighth inning, but the deficit was too big to overcome.
Michigan will return to action on Tuesday (May 3) when the Wolverines kick off a six-game home stand with a midweek contest against Youngstown State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. » Buy Tickets
