SARASOTA, Fla. -- This weekend (Friday through Sunday, May 27-29), the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan rowing program will conclude the 2022 season with the NCAA Championships held at Nathan Benderson Park (NBP) in Sarasota, Fla. The Wolverines return to the site of the 2018 and 2021 Championships, which also played host to the Big Ten Invitational earlier this spring.
The Maize and Blue is at the NCAA Championships for the 14th straight season and the 22nd overall, by virtue of an at-large selection. Ranked as a top-10 team all year and a top-six team for the bulk of the season, the Wolverines are among the most highly regarded teams that did not already qualify automatically.
NBP is a unique 600-acre community park that has proven itself as an excellent venue for top-level racing. The Park and Regatta Center holds a 2,000-meter sprint course and has been hosting organized competitions since 2009.
The weekend will begin with Friday's 9:12 a.m. start, marking the second heat of the 1V8 races. U-M's No. 8-seeded 1V8 will line up in lane four against 15th-seeded Duke on the outside with No. 18 Gonzaga, No. 10 California, and No. 2 Princeton in lanes one through three.
The 2V8 will race at 9:48 a.m., with Michigan (No. 7 seed) in lane four of the first heat. The Wolverines have 16th-seeded Oregon State on their outside, with No. 17 Southern California, No. 9 SMU, and No. 1 Texas in lanes one through three.
U-M's 1V4 is seeded eighth and is set for a 10:48 a.m. start, rowing from lane four of the second heat. U-M will go against Big Ten foe Rutgers (seeded 15th) on the outside, with No. 18 Northeastern, No. 10 Virginia, and No. 2 Stanford in lanes one through three.
Should any boats fail to achieve the top-two finish needed to advance from Friday heats, they will race in the Friday afternoon repechages. Friday results will yield seeding for Saturday's A/B or C/D semifinals, which grant berths to Sunday's Grand Final (national placings 1-6), Petite Final (7-12), C Final (13-18), or D Final (19-22) depending on results.
Team Scoring
The NCAA Rowing champion is determined by total points. The first-place finisher in the Varsity 4+ grand final will earn 22 points, with each finisher after that receiving one fewer (21 for second, 20 for third, all the way to one point for 22nd place). The 2V8+ winner gets 44 points, with each subsequent finisher earning two fewer (42 for second; 40 for third, etc.), and the varsity eight winner gets 66 points, with the second-place team getting 63, etc. Any ties in the point totals are broken by the two (or three) teams' finish in the varsity eight.
Michigan Lineups
Lineup still to come.
