ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5 seeded University of Michigan men's tennis team defeated Oklahoma, 4-0, on Saturday (May 7) in sunny outdoor match at the Wolverines' Varsity Tennis Center. With the victory, Michigan will advance to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time since 2018.
The Wolverine doubles pairs stayed hot as Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 and improved to 17-2 in dual play. The tandem did not allow a single point all weekend, which included a 6-0 win Friday (May 6) against Western Michigan. Ondrej Styler and Jacob Bickersteth clinched the doubles point as they won the last three games after being knotted at 3-3 at No. 3. No. 27 Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider held a 5-3 lead at No. 1 before it was called.
Ehrenschneider, who was held on court the longest in Friday's match, reversed course and dominated his singles match at No. 5. He did not allow a single point until the second set, when he had a 5-0 lead. The No. 77-ranked player improved to 13-1 in dual play as he took down Welsh Hotard 6-0, 5-2.
No. 70-ranked Bickersteth won his seventh consecutive match and 23rd of the season at No. 4. Bickersteth grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first set and only gave up two games as he took the first set 6-2. Down 1-0 in the second set, he rattled off five straight to take the 5-1 edge and finished with another 6-2 win.
No. 27-ranked Styler claimed his seventh straight and 23rd victory, defeating Mark Mandik 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. After dropping the first game, he settled in and won the next two and took a lead he would not relinquish. Styler jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and pushed ahead to 5-1 before splitting the final two games.
Maloney led 6-4, 5-1 at No. 2, Fenty was headed to a third set at No. 3 after a big 6-0 second set and Nick Beaty was up 7-5, 3-1 at No. 6 before the match was called.
