ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In what was a strong regular-season finale, the University of Michigan women's track and field team claimed eight event wins and got a new school record as it hosted the Len Paddock Open Saturday (May 7) at the U-M Outdoor Track and Field Stadium.
Corinne Jemison had the performance of the meet as she crushed the school record in the shot put on two consecutive attempts. She first broke the 19-year-old mark of 16.43m (53-11) held by April Phills with a fifth-round throw of 16.54m (54-3.25) heave, and followed that with a 16.92m (55-6.25) on her sixth-and-final throw to put an exclamation point on the series.
In the highly competitive Big Ten, that mark moved her from No. 8 to No. 7 on the 2022 leaderboard. Amanda Schaare finished second at 15.49m (50-9.75).
Though not a win, Jemison was also second in the discus at 51.92m (170-4), with Schaare right behind at a season's best 50.77m (166-7) for third.
Aasia Laurencin continued her hot streak in the hurdles after her Drake Relays win last weekend, clocking a slightly wind-aided 13.28 (+2.3m/s) to take the victory. It was her fastest time in a Michigan uniform to this point.
Laurencin also won for the second-straight weekend in the 4x100 relay, as she teamed with Ameia Wilson, Hanna Hearn and BreeAna Bates for the win in 45.37. Hearn also went on to win the 100 meters in 11.90 (+0.7m/s).
In the longer 400-meter hurdles, Savannah Sutherland -- who was the runner-up behind Laurencin in 14.01 in the 100 hurdles -- took the win in what became a close race at the end in 59.53. After leading throughout, she held off unattached Jaden O'Brien by .13 of a second at the line.
Three-time Big Ten 400-meter champion Ziyah Holman tuned up her speed ahead of next week's conference meet, claiming the 200 meters in a slightly wind-aided 23.54 (+2.6m/s). Chika Amene was a close second with a significant all-conditions career-best in 23.83. Even adjusting for the wind, it was a superior performance to her wind-legal best of 24.57.
Multiple-time All-American Aurora Rynda took the win at 800 meters in her last race before Big Tens, where she will hope to defend her conference title. Looking to win her first conference title in the steeplechase will be Kayla Windemuller, who finished third Saturday at 1,500 meters in a test of speed in 4:22.78.
Headlining the non-throws action in the field was Hannah Waller, who won the long jump with a best of 5.89m (19-4) (+2.7m/s). Former Big Ten champion Jessica Mercier led the way in the pole vault with an outdoor season's best make at 4.09m (13-5) for fourth.
Up next for the Wolverines are the Big Ten Championships on May 13-15, to be held in Minneapolis, Minn., at the University of Minnesota.
