ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With three of five starters posting rounds of 73 (+2) in the windy conditions at the U-M Golf Course, the 18th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team tallied a 293 opening NCAA Ann Arbor Regional score today (Monday, May 9), positioning itself tied for second with No. 43 Washington (293) and two shots back of first-day leader No. 20 Arkansas (291). All three will be paired for the second round starting off the No. 1 tee at 9:06 a.m. on Tuesday (May 10).
In the tale of two nines, U-M maneuvered its way through the opening nine holes. After posting five birdies to sit two-under at the turn, the Wolverines and the rest of the 12-team field felt a change in conditions as the Midwest winds picked up. With 15-20mph winds, the Maize and Blue was unable to repeat its front side success, carding just three birdies and closing the back nine 11-over. With a 293 (+9), the Maize and Blue tied with Washington for second-place and just two shots back of the lead.
"Some of today was about comfort," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We have never hosted a regional before and we had to get that out of our system. After a solid start, we didn't control our golf ball as well as we could have on the back nine. We let the (windy) conditions get to us a little bit. However, we do have our start on the front nine.
"We made some birdies early under that pressure (of hosting), so we know what that feels like. We can take that and move forward. We have to keep smiling and doing what helps us play well. That means being relaxed and having fun. There is a lot of golf to play and we have a low round in us."
For the Wolverines, senior Ashley Lau, junior Hailey Borja and sophomore Monet Chun each opened with first round 73s (+2) to put themselves in a tie for 13th of the 66-golfer field. Junior Mikaela Schulz's 74 helped the Wolverines have four of five starters among the top 25 as she sits tied for 23rd.
