EUGENE, Ore. -- In the finale of her debut season competing with the University of Michigan women's track and field team, Corinne Jemison became an All-American for the first time in her career Saturday (June 11) on the final day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Throwing in a ring made slick by periodic heavy rainfall, Jemison managed just one legal mark in her three rounds of throwing in the trials, with her 53.22m (174 feet, 7 inches) heave on her final attempt good for 14th place overall and second team All-America honors.
Jemison, a decorated high school thrower in 2018 who transferred to Michigan from the Miami (Ohio) volleyball team ahead of the 2020 season, earned the Wolverine womens' fourth All-America honor of the weekend.
Kayla Windemuller (steeplechase), Aasia Laurencin (100-meter hurdles) and Aurora Rynda (800 meters) all earned second-team awards on the first day of women's competition on Thursday (June 9).
Her day got off to an inauspicious start as she launched the discus into the net structure surrounding the ring on her first attempt, and foot-fouled a second-attempt heave that appeared to travel nearly 54 meters into the sector.
The cutoff to make the nine-woman final for three more throws was ultimately 53.84m (176-8).
Jemison put it all together on her third-and-final attempt to get on the board, but fell short of advancing. Still, she finished third among the four Big Ten qualifiers to nationals after finishing seventh at the conference meet.
The performance put a cap on her first season in uniform for the Wolverines, which also included school records in the discus and outdoor shot put, and a scoring performance in the Big Ten Championships discus.
Though the collegiate season has reached its conclusion, select members of the team will continue their individual campaigns at their respective senior-level and U20 national championships. Stay tuned to MGoBlue.com for more information.
