ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three former University of Michigan hockey players, Andrew Cogliano, JT Compher and Jack Johnson, won the Stanley Cup on Sunday night as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 at Amalie Arena.
The trio become the 11th, 12th and 13th Wolverines to have their names etched on the Cup as players. Additionally, veterans Cogliano (1,140 games played) and Johnson (1,024) became the 18th and 19th players in NHL history to win their first Stanley Cup after appearing in 1,000 career regular-season games.
Andrew Cogliano
Drafted No. 25 overall by Edmonton in 2005, Cogliano signed with the Oilers in 2007. During his 15-year career in the NHL, he also has played with the Anaheim Ducks (2011-19), Dallas Stars (2019-21), and begin this season with the San Jose Sharks before being traded midseason to Colorado. Cogliano spent the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons at Michigan, playing in 77 games and scoring 36 goals and 42 assists for 78 points. During his time as a Wolverine, he also won back-to-back gold medals at the World Juniors Championship, with eight points in 12 games. He was a CCHA All-Rookie Team selection and was a CCHA honorable mention pick as a sophomore.
JT Compher
Compher was drafted No. 35 by the Buffalo Sabres in 2013 and signed with Colorado in 2016. In his six seasons with the Avs, Compher has 71 goals and 71 assists for 142 points in 341 games. The Avs have made the playoffs in five of Compher's six seasons, and he totaled five goals and three assists in this season's playoffs.
The captain his junior year, a season after being an alternate captain at Michigan, Compher totaled 118 points (39 goals, 79 assists) in the maize and blue during his three seasons. He was the Big Ten Rookie of the Year in 2014 when he was named second-team all-league. As a junior, Compher was a first-team all-conference selection as he led Michigan to the Big Ten Tournament title in 2016 and was on the All-Tournament team.
Jack Johnson
A 16-year NHL veteran, Johnson was the highest-drafted Wolverine prior to the 2021 NHL Draft, taken third overall by the Carolina Hurricanes. He signed with the Los Angeles Kings (2007-12) after his sophomore season and spent time with Columbus (2012-18) as alternate captain, Pittsburgh (2018-20) and New York (2020-21) before joining Colorado this season. In 1,024 games, Johnson has 72 goals and 240 assists for 312 points. His 240 assists rank him eighth in Michigan's #ProBlue record book.
Johnson played in two World Junior Championships, five World Championships -- wearing a letter three times -- and won a silver medal as a member of the 2010 Olympic Team.
While in Ann Arbor, Johnson had 71 points in 74 games. He held the freshman defenseman record for most points until this season, when Luke Hughes surpassed his 32 points.
