
Wolverines, Canadian 8+ Finish Seventh in Italy

VARESE, Italy -- As the 2022 Under-23 World Rowing Championships begin in Italy this week (July 25-30), two members of the University of Michigan rowing team will travel to compete and represent their countries during the international competition. Rising junior Abigail Dent is making her second U-23's appearance for Team Canada, rowing in the 8+, while rising sophomore Gabrielle Graves is with Team USA as an alternate. Wolverine signee Jana Peachey is also competing with Dent in the Canadian 8+.
Events will be held at Lake Varese, located in the Northern part of Italy about 35 miles north of Milan, near the Swiss border. The town lies at the foot of the Campo dei Fiori mountain range overlooking the lake. The lake itself is about five and a half miles long and nearly three miles wide.
Racing begins on Monday, July 25 with single sculls and lightweight single sculls, and continues through Saturday, July 30. Dent and Team Canada's 8+ will begin racing on Tuesday, July 26.
The 2022 WRU23 Championships Organizing Committee will provide a live streaming service for the event. Streaming information will be available at the World Rowing site.
Varese's population is about 80,000, and is part of Natura 2000, the European Union's largest system of protected areas, which safeguard rare or endangered species or habitats. The event is being held in Varese for the first time and is being held in Italy for the first time since 1988.

In the repechage for the 8+, the Canadian boat including Wolverines Abigail Dent and rising freshman Jana Peachey rowed to a fifth-place finish in 6:17.52. In a narrow race for a bid to the A Final, the boat came up just short. Italy won the heat in 6:16.21, with Germany in second and Romania in third. The Dutch boat that finished in fourth timed 6:17.20, narrowly beating out the Canadians. Dent and Peachey have helped Canada finish seventh overall in the event.
Tuesday, July 26 (Heats)
Competing in the first of two heats, Abigail Dent and U-M rising freshman Jana Peachey rowed with the Canadian 8+ to a fourth-place finish. The U.S. boat advanced straight to finals in 6:07.80, nearly seven seconds ahead of the field. Places two through four were tighter; the Canadians crossed +3.56 seconds behind the runner-up Dutch with a time of 6:18.34. Italy finished third. In order to reach the A Final, Dent, Peachey and Team Canada must finish top-four in Wednesday's repechage. Racing will be at 10 a.m. EST.
