ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team closed out its home weekend with a 3-0 shutout over Cornell on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18) in front of 514 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was U-M's third shutout win of the season.
Michigan (4-3) opened scoring early in the first quarter, at the 4:56 mark, with junior Lora Clarke getting her stick on a corner shot from sophomore Abby Tamer and sweeping it into the right side of the cage for her third goal of the season. Tamer also assisted on senior Sarah Pyrtek's second-quarter corner goal at the 20:26 mark, tipping the initial high from the center of the circle for her second goal this fall.
The Wolverines remained hot after halftime, earning eight shots in the first five minutes of the third quarter, but Cornell (2-3) also put up its biggest threat with three corners and four shots in the frame. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned a big stop on a drag flick on the first corner, before the next two produced shots wide.
Graduate student Tina D'Anjolell added insurance in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, tipping in her first goal of the season on a quick pass from fifth-year senior Katie Anderson at the 54:77 mark.
U-M outshot Cornell 31-4 -- including a start to the second half that included eight shots in five minutes -- and outcornered them 14-3. Spieker recorded two saves in the match, while Cornell goalkeeper Aerin Park saved 11 of the Wolverines' 16 shots on goal. The Big Red also recorded a pair of defensive saves.
Michigan will return to Big Ten play next weekend on the road, facing Maryland at 6 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 23) in College Park, and Rutgers at noon on Sunday (Sept. 25) in Piscataway, N.J.
