ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Rowing program announced Tuesday (Sept. 27) the promotion of coach Liz Tuppen to associate head coach. Tuppen, who has been on staff since the 2012-13 season, spent 10 years as an assistant coach with the program.
Head Coach Mark Rothstein, who is in his 32nd season leading the Wolverines, said the time was right for Tuppen to be recognized with a title befitting her role in the program.
"Liz is an outstanding coach who has been a key component of our sustained success as a program over the last 10 years," said Rothstein. "I could not be more proud to recognize her with the title of associate head coach, and I look forward to her continuing to help lead Michigan Rowing for years to come."
"I have been so thrilled to be a part of this amazing program for the past 10 years and am incredibly honored and appreciative for Mark to recognize my role in this way," said Tuppen.
"I get to work with hard-working and brilliant student-athletes and the most supportive staff. Being part of this team is about being part of something much bigger than yourself, and I am very lucky to call Michigan my home. I am just excited to continue to work with Mark and our amazing colleagues and student-athletes to make Michigan Rowing the best it can be."
Tuppen has helped the Wolverines return to the Big Ten winner's circle in her decade on staff. She helped coach the Maize and Blue to Big Ten Championships in 2019 and 2021, including an all-time best program performance in '21, when the team produced 191 of a possible 192 points.
Tuppen has worked closely with the second varsity eight (2V8) boats over the last seven years and no Michigan boat has been more decorated during that stretch of time. The 2V8 has captured five of six Big Ten titles (2015, '17, '19, '21, '22) with one second-place finish under her leadership. The boat also qualified for the NCAA Grand Final for four straight years (2017-19, '21).
Wolverine rowers have collected 28 All-America honors, including 12 first-team distinctions, during her time on staff. Michigan's academic standards also remain high, with the program accumulating 266 Academic All-Big Ten honors over the last 10 seasons.
Tuppen was part of the coaching staff for the U.S. Under-23 team in 2020 and 2021 and coached the South African U-23 pair of Tayla-May Bentley and Jessica Schoonbee to a silver medal in 2019. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Tuppen competed at Ohio State from 2001-04 and worked there as a volunteer coach (2008-09). Tuppen continued her coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Rhode Island (2009-12) before joining the Michigan staff.
