IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Freshman Jett Howard scored a career-high 34 points behind seven three-pointers and junior Hunter Dickinson notched his fourth double-double of the season, but the University of Michigan men's basketball team fell to Iowa in overtime Thursday night (Jan. 12) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
SUMMARY: The Wolverines (9-7, 3-2 B1G) held a lead over the Hawkeyes (11-6, 3-3 B1G) for most of regulation behind a valiant scoring effort, but a late four-point play from Iowa's Payton Sandfort sent the game into overtime. Michigan struggled from the field in the extra period – going one-for-eight – as Iowa pulled away to hand U-M the 93-84 overtime loss.
OVERTIME: The Hawkeyes went on an 8-0 run to start the overtime period and pulled ahead for an 89-77 lead. A jumper from junior Terrance Williams II helped cut the Michigan deficit to six with just over 90 seconds remaining, but an offensive rebound by Iowa late in its next possession forced the Wolverines to send the Hawkeyes to the free throw line, putting the game out of reach.
SECOND HALF: Sophomore Kobe Bufkin knocked down a triple on Michigan's first possession of the second half and a floater from freshman Dug McDaniel helped stretch the Wolverine advantage to seven, however Iowa made five of its next six field goals to take a one-point lead with just under 15 minutes to play. Howard answered by scoring U-M's next 10 points and a Will Tschetter three-pointer capped off a 13-2 run, putting Michigan ahead, 65-55, for its largest lead of the game. A three-minute scoring drought in which Michigan committed three turnovers allowed Iowa to pull within two, but McDaniel ended the drought with a triple and extended the lead to five with six minutes remaining. The Wolverines did not score again until McDaniel made another three, once again putting the Maize and Blue ahead by five, and Dickinson's putback stretched the lead as high as seven with 2:18 to play. Despite a Michigan lead late, Iowa closed regulation on a 9-2 and erased the advantage; with 20 seconds to play, a four-point play from Sandfort tied the game at 79 and sent the teams into overtime.
FIRST HALF: Howard opened the game red hot, scoring U-M's first 11 points while shooting four-of-four from the field to establish an 11-5 lead. After a stretch in which Iowa missed six straight field goals, the Hawkeyes responded by making their next five shots to briefly take back the lead, but a triple from Howard gave the advantage back to the Wolverines. With just over 10 minutes before the break, a deep three-pointer from Howard – his fifth straight three-point make – extended Michigan's lead to 25-20. When Iowa took another one-point advantage late in the half behind a 7-2 run, the Wolverines answered by holding the Hawkeyes scoreless for the final 2:37, and jumpers from Bufkin and Howard were enough to put Michigan ahead, 43-40, at halftime. Howard scored a whopping 21 points in the first half, a number that tied his previous career-high.
WHAT'S NEXT: Michigan will continue its Big Ten campaign against Northwestern on Sunday (Jan. 15) at Crisler Center. Tip-off is scheduled for noon, and the game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
