EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team used bonus points and a strong second half at the upperweights to highlight a 25-10 rivalry win over No. 21 Michigan State in its Big Ten Conference dual opener Friday night (Jan. 13) in front of nearly 5,000 fans at Jenison Field House. It was MSU's first loss of the season.
The Wolverines (6-0, 1-0 Big Ten) claimed seven of 10 bouts, earning back-to-back major decisions at 141 and 149 pounds and a pin at heavyweight. Michigan held a four-point lead at the intermission break before claiming four of the final five bouts to slam the door on the Spartans.
Cameron Amine started the second-half rally with a 3-2 decision against Caleb Fish at 165 pounds. Amine, ranked sixth in the latest InterMat poll, broke the tie off a go-behind late, earning the flash takedown on a hand touch from the rear standing position. He improved to 3-0 in duals since his return to the lineup from injury.
Max Maylor earned a 6-2 decision over Ceasar Garza at 174 pounds with a pair of takedowns and 1:40 riding-time advantage. He struck first out of a first-period scramble and iced it midway through the third on a reattack single leg, using a pair of big mat returns to ride out the match.
Matt Finesilver picked up a ranked at 184 pounds with a 10-4 decision over No. 17 Layne Malczewski. Finesilver, ranked ninth nationally, scored takedowns in the first and second periods -- on a single and cradle out of a scramble -- and after allowing a late MSU takedown in the third, reversed Malczewski to his back for four points in the waning seconds of the match. He accumulated 1:06 in riding time and improved to 6-0 in duals.
Michigan nearly pulled off the upset at 197 pounds, where Brendin Yatooma was awarded the winning takedown in sudden victory against 15th-ranked Cam Caffey, only to have it waved off -- and Michigan deducted a team point -- and narrowly fall 6-5 in the tiebreaker. Yatooma also led late in regulation after a second-period takedown, a Caffey locked-hands penalty and a quick escape in the third but was hit for stalling in the final 10 seconds to even the score and force overtime.
Mason Parris, ranked second at heavyweight, put an exclamation point on the dual with a second-period fall against Ryan Vasbinder in the final match. Parris lead 10-1 on two takedowns and a four-point turn off an arm bar before using the arm bar to collect the pin at 4:09. It was Parris' third straight pin and ninth of the season; he improved to 16-0.
U-M also won three of the opening five weights but sacrificed upset losses at 133 and 157 pounds. Jack Medley kicked of the dual with a solid 6-3 decision over 25th-ranked Tristan Lujan at 125 pounds -- his third straight dual win this semester and second over a ranked opponent. Medley scored on a first-period high crotch in the first and a low double in the second to build his lead.
Cole Mattin and Chance Lamer claimed back-to-back bonus wins at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Mattin, ranked 23rd, used a huge third period to rally from an initial deficit and defeat Jordan Hamdan 12-3. Trailing by a point entering the final frame, Mattin scored 10 unanswered, scrambling into a fireman's position for two-and-two before adding two more two-point tilts and riding out the bout for 1:22 in time advantage.
Lamer, ranked 20th at 149 pounds, controlled from start to finish en route to a 10-2 major decision over Peyton Omania, scoring four takedowns and earning 2:53 riding-time advantage. He converted on a variety of attacks, including a double leg off the opening whistle and a go behind midway through the third before flattening Omania out and riding out the match. He improved to 6-0 in duals this season.
Michigan will return home Sunday (Jan. 15) to host No. 14 Wisconsin at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Cliff Keen Arena -- U-M's first home dual in nearly two months. The dual will be streamed live on B1G+.
