
Richard Wins All-Around as Wolverines Take Fourth at Rocky Mountain Open

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team placed fourth in the Rocky Mountain Open with a team score of 398.900 on Saturday night (Jan. 26) at the United States Air Force Academies Cadet West Gym.
Stanford (6-0) won the meet with a score of 420.100, while Oklahoma (4-1) and Nebraska (6-3) finished second and third with scores of 411.850 and 405.300, respectively. Host Air Force (1-4) finished fifth (397.400), and Arizona State (0-5) finished sixth with a score of 381.450.
Freshman Fred Richard won the all-around competition for the first time in his career (83.200). His top score came on high bar, as he placed second with a 14.75 and also placed sixth on parallel bars with a 14.10.
Michigan (8-4) led the meet through three rotations, but were unable to score above a 65.000 on any of the final three events -- high bar, floor exercise, and pommel horse.
U-M began the night on still rings, scoring a 67.15, and sat in fourth place through the first rotation. Junior Chris Read led the rotation with a 13.80 on the apparatus to place ninth.
In the second rotation, U-M moved to vault and collected a 70.90. Four Wolverines broke the 14-plateau, with sophomore David Wolma (14.55) and freshman Fred Richard (14.50) placed in the top 10. Through two rotations, U-M had a 138.150 team tally and sat in first place by a margin of 1.65 point over Oklahoma.
U-M's lead grew to 1.95 in the third rotation, as the Wolverines scored a huge 69.85, the third-highest score in the country on the season, on parallel bars. Junior Evgeny Siminiuc scored a 14.60, while sophomore Lais Najjar (14.500) to place third and fourth, respectively.
Richard added to his stellar night on high bar, scoring a 14.65 to take second. However, the Wolverines were forced to count a pair of falls on the event, notching an event score of 64.65, and slipped into third place.
Following a 63.35 on floor exercise for a running team score of 272.750, the Wolverines sat in fourth place and finished the meet on pommel horse with a 62.50 to cement the 398.900 team score and a fourth-place finish.
Senior Crew Bold made his season debut, taking part on still rings and high bar. He marked a 13.60 on rings and a 13.45 on high bar.
The Maize and Blue hit 19 of 30 routines on the night (63.3 percent), and stuck four routines.
Michigan returns home to host No. 7 Ohio State next Saturday (Jan. 28) at 1 p.m. inside Cliff Keen Arena. The contest will be streamed live on BTN+.
