ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team opened Big Ten competition with a 409.200-404.000 win against No. 5 Ohio State on Saturday (Jan. 28) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
U-M (9-4, 1-0 Big Ten) led wire-to-wire and won five of six team events and four individual events, including two by freshman Fred Richard.
The meet began on floor exercise, where Michigan scored 69.100 to Ohio State's 67.050. Freshman Landen Blixt took first in the event with a score of 14.65.
Next, teams moved to pommel horse for the second rotation. U-M compiled a team score of 63.600, with Richard placing second in the event with a 14.05. After two rotations, Michigan led Ohio State 132.700-131.450.
On still rings during the third rotation, Michigan extended its lead with a team score of 68.500. Junior Chris Read took second on the event with a career-high score of 14.25. Michigan topped the 200-plateau after the third rotation and held a 201.200-188.350 edge heading into the fourth rotation, vault.
On the vault, U-M scored a 71.200 led by a first-place finish from sophomore David Wolma and his career-best 14.75. Blixt took second with a score of 14.65. parallel bars. Meanwhile, U-M maintained a 272.400-269.400 advantage as the teams moved to parallel bars for the fifth rotation.
U-M scored a 68.500 on bars, with OSU countering with a 67.400. Richard placed first on the event with a score of 14.85, and junior Evgeny Siminiuc scored 14.550 to finish in second place. With one event remaining, Michigan accumulated a 340.900-336.800 lead oer the Buckeyes.
Closing out the meet on high bar, Michigan scored 68.300. Richard took first place with a score of 14.65, with Siminiuc finishing in a tie for second place with a score of 14.00.
Overall, the Maize and Blue hit 24 of 30 routines on the day (80 percent), and stuck three routines.
The Wolverines next will head to No. 3 Nebraska for a Saturday (Feb. 4) meet in Lincoln. The competition begins at 6 p.m. CST and it will be streamed live on B1G+.
